Central works in J. S. Bach's musical output, the religious cantatas, intended for Lutheran services, are for many true gems illustrating the composer's genius. The early cantatas presented in this program are in no way trial balloons but, on the contrary, testify to the great compositional mastery of a young Bach putting all his know-how at the service of the message to be conveyed, that is to say, the text. It is this challenge, finding the right balance between text and music, that the singers and instrumentalists of the Mensa Sonora ensemble take up here with sensitivity and maturity. Arias, recitatives, chorales and sinfonias follow one another within varied formal frameworks, keeping the listener's attention constantly alert for a time of meditation and true aesthetic joy.
