This circuit takes you in the footsteps of an old vineyard with a very rare grape variety: Négrette. Near the surrounding woods you will discover charming shaded paths.

Getting to the starting point to report a problem

Step 1: La Foye-Monjault

This village, made up of six hamlets, takes its name from the ash tree (faia), thus confirming that at the end of the 1080th century, La Foye was covered with wood, especially beech trees. This word then became Faya Monacalis, the beech grove of the monks, then later La Foye-Monjault. From 1, the monks cleared land to cultivate cereals and grapes. The village has long produced the most famous wine of the department, the wine from the mouth of kings, consumed at the court of the monarchs of France (Francis I, Henri IV) and England.

Step 2: Vine, Négrette grape variety

On the left is the vine planted 100% with the “Négrette” grape variety which produces the “Cuvée des aïeux”. This vine is located in the territory of the commune of Rochénard. The communes of La Foye-Monjault and La Rochénard were a vineyard country, destroyed by phylloxera at the end of the XNUMXth century. They have retained their title of ordinary wood Cognac.

Step 3: Alleux Path

This ridge path forms the boundary between the communes of Vallans (canton of Frontenay-Rohan-Rohan) and Foye-Monjault (canton of Beauvoir-sur-Niort). View to the left over the Courance valley and Niort on the horizon.

Step 4: The old sandpits

In the wood on the right we can observe holes, traces of old sand pits.

Step 5: High Point

It is the highest point in the town and the surrounding area (73 m), offering a beautiful view of the Mignon valley on the left.

Step 6: Le Puyroux

View of the hamlets “le Grand Bois” on the left and opposite “le Puyroux” which owes its name to its ferruginous water. Ferruginous water is a variety of mineral water rich in ions. These waters have long been attributed the merit of preventing (or curing) alcoholism because they provide the iron which usually comes from regular consumption of alcohol, which has the effect of increasing the iron content in the blood.

Step 7: The Fief of the Naked Cross

The Fief of the Naked Cross is located at the crossroads, there are still a few vines there, some of which are abandoned.

Step 8: The big pond

We notice on the right the remains of a large pond which was 3/4 filled in when the water supply arrived (former Priory moat). After phylloxera, when livestock farming had to replace vineyards, the pond became an important water point for people and animals. On the right, the small Church with its open bell tower.
