The underground river
20 km north of Niort, on the border between the plain of Niort and the Gâtine, stands a witness hill where the village of ChampdeniersThis hill is bordered to the south by the Egray valley and to the northwest by another valley crossed by a stream called the Gâchet.
It is at the place called “La Chauvinière” that this stream sees its course interrupted by the loss of its waters in the cracks of the limestone hill to reappear on the other side, some 2 km away, at the south-south-east foot of the Champdeniers hillside, at the “Great Fountain“. From there, it continues its course, in the valley of the Egray. The penetration of the network can, until now, only be done from this resurgence.
Access thanks to an agreement between the commune of Champdeniers, owner of access to the river, in requesting access authorization from the Departmental Speleology Committee 79.
