THE PORT DISTRICT

The port of Niort had several locations before settling definitively in the 19th century in Port Boinot. The neighborhood that developed around it today houses beautiful homes and some evidence of past activities.

NIORT IN THE MIDDLE AGES

Le Donjon, the half-timbered houses and theNotre-Dame church are still visible witnesses to the importance of the city in the Middle Ages. It is also an opportunity to talk about missing monuments: the city fortifications and the castle.

The Halles of Niort

Elected “Most beautiful market in France” in 2024.

THE HALLS

Completed in 1871, these Halles are inspired by Parisian constructions by Baltard. Combining glass and cast iron, they bring together several spaces dedicated to commerce under the same roof. Since 1987, they have been listed as historical monuments and are part of five examples preserved in Deux-Sèvres. They still embody today the city's commercial tradition.

THE DUGUESCLIN BARRACKS

Due to its strategic location, the Niort barracks are one of the first twenty built in France. Of you “à la Vauban”, this barracks was successively enlarged in the 19th century and took the name of You Guesclin in 1887. 2002 marks the installation of the departmental council in the northern part. It is also the classification of facades and roofs – a protection which is added to that of the site in 1994 – due to its architectural quality.

A GARDEN IN THE CITY: THE PUBLIC GARDEN CALLED PLANTS

Built in the 19th century on the hillside of Saint-André hill, here is a garden which sums up the art of living at that time. Rock gardens and rustications, ponds and waterfalls can be discovered during a intimate and bucolic stroll.

INDUSTRIAL HERITAGE

It is on the banks of the river that settle the main industries of the city succeeding the old wheat mills. The predominance of tanneries and chamois factories made famous Niort until the 1970s. The last active site has today been rehabilitated: Port Boinot.
