A village developed around the ancient domain of Bassinius, a rich Gallo-Roman owner, Bessines is located at the crossroads of Aunis and Poitou. Bordered by the Jaron reach and the Vieille Sèvre, the rural commune is nestled on the side of a hill which dominated the former Gulf of Pictons. Its Romanesque church, a stopover on the Chemin de Santiago, and its 3 ports open the door to the Marais Poitevin. The town has hosted a number of personalities from the visual arts and the 7th art, the most famous of which is Jean Richard, the only actor in the world to have performed all of Georges Simenon's Commissioner Maigret and who was born in 1921 in Bessines, at the manor of the Pierre Levée (private property from the XNUMXth century).
