Le Puits d'Enfer
On the outskirts of Saint-Maixent-l'Ecole, this steep site is classified for its landscape and environmental qualities but also for its picturesque and legendary character. There is remarkable flora in the wooded areas of rocky outcrops. A path leads to the heart of nature, alongside a stream and its waterfall. A legend says that a peasant who crossed the tumultuous waters with his cart was swept away and disappeared forever in “the Well of Hell”.
The Puits d'Enfer site is registered as a Sensitive Natural Area at the departmental level.
