Glossary

What is a cycle route?

A cycle route is a medium or long distance cycle route, continuous (without interruption, including in towns) marked out and secure.
The cycle routes use all types of secure routes including greenways.

What is a greenway?

The greenway is “a road exclusively reserved for the circulation of non-motorized vehicles, pedestrians and horse riders” (highway code). It is accessible to as many people as possible, without any particular physical requirements. Pedestrians, cyclists, people with reduced mobility, rollerbladers, etc. use it for leisure, tourism and daily travel.
The greenways are developed on their own site on the right-of-way of disused railway lines, the banks of waterways, forest tracks, rural roads, etc.
